Liverpool travel to Amsterdam for their UCL opener on the back of a 2-2 draw against Everton in the Merseyside derby over the weekend. The Reds certainly were hoping for a better result at Goodison Park but that wasn't the major blow that Jurgen Klopp's side suffered on Saturday. Virgil van Dijk sustained a serious knee injury in the derby and is set to spend more than six months on the sidelines.
What's more, Alisson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and long-term absentee Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all miss the trip to the Netherlands through injuries.
Ajax, meanwhile, have a fully-fit squad to face the current Premier League champions.
Prediction
Erik ten Hag's men have in great form this season so far, having won four out of their opening five games in the Eredivisie. Klopp's side, in turn, started off their domestic campaign with three victories before suffering a 7-2 loss at the hands of Aston Villa and failing to beat Everton in their latest two league encounters. It remains to be seen how Liverpool will cope with the absence of Van Dijk but Ajax's chances to beat the Reds have increased massively after the Dutchman's injury.
